Awards season continues to shock and surprise us with this years Oscar nominations.

This morning, March 15th, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas announced this years Academy Award Nominees, which featured some incredible milestones that are worth mentioning. For the first time in Academy Awards history, two women were nominated for best director in the same year; Chloe Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Before this morning, only 5 women in total have ever been nominated for Best Director, with Kathryn Bigelow being the only woman to ever take the coveted award. Also, Chloe Zhao becomes the first woman of Asian decent to be nominated for directing.

Leading the pack with 10 nominees is David Fincher’s original Netflix film Mank, a film seen through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiwicz as he desperately tries to finish the screen play for Citizen Kane. Another notable film to mention is Nomadland, which has been cleaning up this awards season, received 7 nominations this morning.

Steven Yeun, who is nominated for Best Actor for his work in the movie Minari, became the first Asian-American actor to get a nod in this category. Minari, which is a film about a Korean family moving to Arkansas to start a farm, tied notable Best Picture nominees; The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 with six nominations apiece.

Also, Chadwick Boseman deservedly received the posthumous Best Actor nomination this morning for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. A couple weeks ago, he won the Golden Globe for the same role, which was accepted by his wife, whose speech moved me tears.

The Oscars will be presented live on ABC, Sunday, April 25th at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.
