Academy Award 2022 Predictions

I am really looking forward to this year’s Academy Awards as usual. I will get some of my favourite snacks, dress in my classiest sweatpants, and lay out my predictions to see how many I get right. This year however, the Oscars have opted to cut out 8 awards. The awards that will not be presented live are; documentary short, […]

THE UNFORGIVABLE: A MOVIE I WILL NEVER FORGIVE FOR EXISTING

Sandra Bullock’s performance is the only bright spot of this otherwise overly melodramatic and slow paced film that has no business existing other than to give Sandra Bullock a shot at an Oscar. The story feels old-fashioned and poised at making us sympathize with those who have served their time, rather than justifying its jarring plot developments and decisions of […]

DUNE: THE ARTSY BLOCKBUSTER WE NEEDED

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible because it features one of the most immersive and visually spectacular worlds ever created. Gorgeous special effects pair well with the brilliant acting and deeply layered story. While the pacing and complex narrative may not be for everyone, this is an adaptation made with heart and immense respect for the classic source material.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS: THE TRUE MEANING OF A POPCORN FLICK

Sheng-Chi is escapism at its finest. Even though the story is fascinatingly familiar, it sucks you in immediately with its lore, complex villain, and endearingly likeable main characters. It’s as if art has come to life, thanks to the brilliant fight choreography, which compliments the dazzling cinematography. While it likely won’t achieve the impact that Black Panther had, it certainly packs a punch, leaves a lasting impression, and does the Asian community justice.

EMMY AWARDS 2021 PREDICTIONS

My favourite time of year is upon us. There are many things that I look forward to that indicate the arrival of autumn. First off, the pumpkin spiced latte returns to Starbucks, then, apple picking becomes the ideal weekend activity, the leaves change into gorgeous hues of yellow, red, and orange, and the NFL is back. But most importantly, television’s […]

THE SUICIDE SQUAD: GUARDIANS OF THE DCU

James Gunn properly utilizes the wonderful source material by making the second Suicide Squad a bloody funny and action packed thrill ride. Thanks to some well-realized anti-heroes, gorgeous comic-book style violence, and more heart than I was expecting, The Suicide Squad is one of the best films of 2021. The DCU should be thanking their fearless leader James Gunn, along with the rest of this gloriously perfect cast.

OLD: IT GETS OLD FAST

M. Night Shyamalan once again proves why he’s one of the most ambitious directors working. While Old features a brilliant story and some themes that will hit a lot of people close to home. Its cheesy dialogue, odd directing choices and lack of empathy for the cast prevents this film from achieving greatness. While certainly better than most of Shyamalan’s movies, it just didn’t do enough to warrant a recommendation.

FAST AND FURIOUS 9: FAMILY, CORONA, AND THE MOST OUT OF THIS WORLD ACTION

Despite it falling short in comparison to the long running series’ earlier efforts, Fast and Furious 9 still manages to be an excellent summer blockbuster that you should race back to the theatre to see. The stunts remain both ridiculous and uproarious, plus the cast’s comfortable chemistry and undeniable charm is enough to keep you hooked and dying for the next one to come out sooner.

CRUELLA: A STYLISHLY PLEASANT SURPRISE

Cruella manages to distinguish itself from the rest of Disney’s live-action adaptations thanks to stylish direction, jaw-dropping costume design, Oscar calibur acting from its leading ladies and a script that achieves success in transforming its well-known evil antagonist into an anti-hero you admire. Cruella is a pleasant surprise that will have you begging for a sequel. You know her as […]

MARE OF EASTTOWN: HELLO DARKNESS, MY OLD FRIEND

HBO’s latest crime thriller hooks you from the minute you first lay your eyes on Kate Winslet and never lets go. She is a tour de force in the lead role and demonstrates why she is one of the best actresses working. Though it’s a mystery we have seen many times before, Mare of Easttown separates itself from the pack with sensational writing by giving us unique, memorable characters and overarching themes that hit almost too close to home.

SHADOW AND BONE: X-MEN: THE LAST AIRBENDER

Shadow and Bone manages to transcend familiarity thanks to some stellar performances from a cast of relatively unknown actors. The remarkable special effects transport you into this fascinating world that blends. Though the lore presented is incredibly intriguing, I wish they would’ve dived a little deeper into it.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW: SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL

If you are looking for a prime example of how to ruin some excellent source material, look no further than The Woman in the Window. This film struggles to achieve any genuine thrills and chills, it fails to live up to its stellar cast and it pales in comparison to the many movies it pays tribute to. A spectacularly disappointing feature that I will have a hard time remembering…
