Denis Villeneuve’s Dune deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible because it features one of the most immersive and visually spectacular worlds ever created. Gorgeous special effects pair well with the brilliant acting and deeply layered story. While the pacing and complex narrative may not be for everyone, this is an adaptation made with heart and immense respect for the classic source material.
Sheng-Chi is escapism at its finest. Even though the story is fascinatingly familiar, it sucks you in immediately with its lore, complex villain, and endearingly likeable main characters. It’s as if art has come to life, thanks to the brilliant fight choreography, which compliments the dazzling cinematography. While it likely won’t achieve the impact that Black Panther had, it certainly packs a punch, leaves a lasting impression, and does the Asian community justice.
James Gunn properly utilizes the wonderful source material by making the second Suicide Squad a bloody funny and action packed thrill ride. Thanks to some well-realized anti-heroes, gorgeous comic-book style violence, and more heart than I was expecting, The Suicide Squad is one of the best films of 2021. The DCU should be thanking their fearless leader James Gunn, along with the rest of this gloriously perfect cast.
M. Night Shyamalan once again proves why he’s one of the most ambitious directors working. While Old features a brilliant story and some themes that will hit a lot of people close to home. Its cheesy dialogue, odd directing choices and lack of empathy for the cast prevents this film from achieving greatness. While certainly better than most of Shyamalan’s movies, it just didn’t do enough to warrant a recommendation.
Despite it falling short in comparison to the long running series’ earlier efforts, Fast and Furious 9 still manages to be an excellent summer blockbuster that you should race back to the theatre to see. The stunts remain both ridiculous and uproarious, plus the cast’s comfortable chemistry and undeniable charm is enough to keep you hooked and dying for the next one to come out sooner.

Relatable for anyone of any age, hilarious all the way through, and heartfelt like so many of your favourite animated movies. The Mitchells vs The Machines is that wonderful dose of escapism that we all crave that doesn’t talk down to its audience and wears its themes and heart on its sleeve.
Stowaway offers a chilly atmosphere, sensational production value and some excellent performances. However, it fails to live up to its truly heartbreaking philosophical questions by downplaying what should be an edge of your seat series of events and some tough decisions made by the main characters.

Even Michael B Jordan’s committed performance can’t save us from lackluster action and an underwhelming story that hits every familiar beat. We’ve seen it all before and sadly, Without Remorse isn’t as clever as it thinks it is.
Writer/director Emerald Fennell immediately makes you uncomfortable in the most sensational way, as she presents us with a revenge tale unlike it’s ever been told before. Carey Mulligan gives us a darkly provocative and layered performance making her worthy of the top prize at the Academy Awards. Balancing entertaining with enlightening, Promising Young Woman is a film that’s executed brilliantly.
Featuring some fabulous performances from Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage, I Care A Lot manages to become the equivalent of watching a car crash happen in front of you. It’s absolutely horrific to witness, yet, no matter how hard you try, you just cannot look away.
Once again, Disney proves why they are leagues ahead of everyone when it comes to their films. Featuring breathtaking visuals, stellar voice-acting and a message that will resonate with both children and adults about the power of kindness and coming together.
With its clever use of sound to give us a sensational visceral experience and Riz Ahmed’s tour de force performance, Sound of Metal heightened my empathy for the deaf community, while leaving me in awe simultaneously. This is a film that will stay with me for a long time.
