The following films on this list celebrate motherhood in their unique ways and remind us about the trials and tribulations that come with being a mother. Our list has something for everyone because despite what you might have heard, not every mom likes the same genre of movie. When we made this list of the best movies you should watch with your mom on Mother’s Day, we actually consulted our moms and got some truly unique suggestions from them. Inventor Adam Brewster (Seth Rogen) is about to embark on a road trip that could change his life forever. After quickly stopping off at his mom’s (Barbra Straisand) house, Adam gains a new travel companion as she decides to join in on the adventure. This film exemplifies the mother and son relationship and doesn’t have a lot of surprises. But the 2 leads lovely chemistry and charm make this a sweet film to watch with your mom and may even make you consider taking her on a road trip.
This biopic tells the story of future NFL first round draft pick Michael Oher. Leigh-Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) and Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw) decide to adopt Michael Oher after learning about his upbringing and current homeless status. He takes an interest in football and Leigh-Anne makes sure he gets every opportunity possible to succeed. Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for her excellent performance in this film and though the movie bends the truth, The Blind Side is a wonderful example of a mothers intentions for her children. She will do anything to help them succeed.
Mother/daughter relationships take center stage in this film. Four young Chinese women born in America along with their mothers who are born in China explore their past through a series of flashbacks hoping to better understand each other. Featuring some truly outstanding performances from the cast, this faithful adaptation from its source material is an eye-opening look at just how difficult it can be to bond with a mother and understanding the ultimate sacrifice they made to give their daughters a better life.
Recently widowed Amelia is struggling to cope with being a single mom. Her son Samuel constantly lives in fear of monsters, which results in violent outbursts that help him cope. Things only get worse after Amelie reads a children’s book about a monster that hides in dark areas of the house called Mr. Babadook. This film remains as one of the greatest horror movies ever made and it demonstrates just how hard it is to be a single mother and how resilient they are. So, if you’re looking for something unconventional, give this film a try.
This is the story about a 5 year old indian boy that is adopted by an Australian family. Fast-forward 25 years later and that same boy is on a quest to find his long lost mother, whom he was separated from after he got lost hundreds of kilometers away from home. This film is a truly emotional ride and is made better because of Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. It’s a shining example of the power of a mother’s love as both the adopted and birth mother are painted in beautiful lights. You and your mom will be in tears by the time the credits roll.
An unplanned pregnancy is the heart and soul of this film as 16 year-old Juno (Elliot Page) prepares to have her best friend’s baby. Told over 4 seasons starting with autumn, we see the trials and tribulations of young Juno. This is the first of 3 films where Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman work together and this is a perfect example of why they are a match made in heaven. Sharply written and wonderfully directed, Juno is an absolute delight that gives the spotlight to teen moms and shows us exactly what it means to be a mom at such a young age.
This inspiring movie revolves around a young boy named Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) who was born with facial differences, which have prevented him from going to school. He decides to attend school in person for the first time, much to his parents (Julia Roberts & Owen Wilson) dismay. Fantastic performances and some truly tough subject matter makes this an incredibly heartwarming story where your mother will certainly shed a few tears and you will understand why they worry about us 24/7.
Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter Emma (Debra Winger) both march to the beat of their own drums. Spanning several years of their lives, Aurora shows us how difficult and loving she could be as she seeks true love, while Emma deals with family problems. They do their best to help each other out and try to live joyful lives. This is a true testament to how resilient the mother daughter relationship is, no matter how bad things get. Winner of 5 Academy Awards, including best picture, Terms of Endearment has stood the test of time and remains as the quintessential Mother’s Day film.
Brie Larson’s character was kidnapped exactly 7 years ago. While in captivity, she gives birth to her son. Jack and his mother have been confined to a 10 by 10 foot space, which the boy believes is the whole world. Reaching her breaking point and Jack becoming more curious makes the mother come up with a risky plan to escape the hell they are trapped in. This is an incredibly hard film to watch, but your mom will be on the edge of her seat as she watches the film that introduced us to Jacob Tremblay and reminded us why Brie Larson is an exceptional actress.
This movie is about an overworked mother (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her rebellious teenage daughter (Lindsay Lohan). They don’t get along and after a huge argument at a Chinese restaurant, they both receive a fortune cookie that makes them switch bodies. Now, they are forced to live each other’s lives for one day. This Disney classic is hilarious from start to finish and is an excellent reminder that when things get rough, instead of fighting, a little understanding goes a really long way.
A secretary based in Phoenix decides to embezzle $40,000 of her boss’s clients money and go on the run. While she is on the run, she checks into a motel off the beaten path that is runned by a young man under total domination of his mother. This true classic is absolutely terrifying all the way through. If your mother loves a good scare, this is one she will not be disappointed by. This film is now 61 years old and remains as one of the most influential films of all time.
Featuring the infectious music of ABBA, Mamma Mia is the story of a single mother Donna (Meryl Streep) and her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried). Sophie is about to be married and she learns that one of the three men her mother told stories about could be her father. Determined to find out who her father is, she invites all 3 (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard) of them to her wedding without telling her mother. The music is infectious as you might expect and you will find yourself singing along to all of these classic songs with your mom. So, put on and let this cheesy musical wash over you and have a good time.
This future classic coming of age story centers around Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson. She lives in Sacramento, but longs to escape in favour of opportunity, adventure, and sophistication. It also focuses on her relationship with her mother, which is a true rollercoaster ride as she experiences her first love, the school play, and applying to college so she could finally leave the place she’s lived her whole life. This movie exemplifies a very true perspective on the mother-daughter relationship and your mother will appreciate the love and care that went into Greta Gerwig’s sharply written script. Our mothers made us exactly who we are and this movie will remind you about why we are so damn lucky to have one and why their love is messy in the most beautiful way.
